POWDER HOUR SERIES #3.2: Social Media and the Human Factor w/ IPAC Melissa Hendrickson. There is evidence that many recreational avalanche accidents fall prey to heuristic traps. Heuristic traps, or the human factor, work well in other aspects of our lives, but are not suited to decision making in avalanche terrain. Join Melissa for a talk about the six heuristic traps of avalanche decision making with special influence on how social media is playing an increasing role in the backcountry. In her third season of forecasting for the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center, Melissa covers the Silver Valley/St. Regis forecasting area. She brings over 20 years of backcountry experience that includes the Northeastern US and Canada, time in Utah, and 6 seasons in Idaho.
