A lot of chatter about this in the standard Social Media Outrage Machines. As my wife and I both have the DSP Sport, we're quite interested.
The one thing that stood out in discussions, and confirmed in the product manual, is that Pieps specifically says "Insert the beacon with the display towards the body for best protection (see photos)," a step that may have changed the outcome of the situation as "The crew hypothesizes that the beacon switched off when Nick collided with the trees in the exit of his line."
If, and that's a big if, that's what happened, he didn't hit a tree with enough force to completely break the device, so simply placing it in the pouch as described in the manual may have turned this into just a story of "no sh*t, there we were" over beers.
