Split Splitting a board

Anyone split there own boards here?
I want to know how the flex changes - if its very noticeable.
And durability.
My wife has a hovercraft solid. As they don't make the shortest women's hovercraft as a split I am thinking of splitting it.
She has another split board, but she seems to get along better with the hovercraft, and it is noticeably lighter.

Hey Batski..
There are a few that have done them (Powder Animal I am sure of), but if you don't want to under take it yourself, http://lb-snow.com. you can actually get the Prowder system http://www.prowder.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67&products_id=182) so then you don't have to have bolts put in, just use the already drilled from your board.

Even if you cut it yourself.. I'd do the Prowder system so that there is no worry about screwing up on the bolts for the bindings. All you'll need is to put in the top/bottom clips and chinese clips.

Thanks! You guys are a wealth of info!
I am not afraid to cut N drill it and have plenty of fancy tools to get er done.
Mostly want feedback on board ride and durability after its done.
I think some Prowder tip n tail clips just made my shopping list!
Never heard of them before, excellent looking parts and concept. May go that way if I split her board.

I like the idea of the Prowder binding saddle.. For the price of what it costs for the Voile pucks, may be worth the purchase (I might have to get some to try). My only concern with them would be someone of my size if they would bend.

Durability.. All my boards are custom built as splits. But I can attest to the fact that i can ride my split inbounds.
However, a DIY split may have some variance, but not likely to be noticed unless you are a really hard charger IMO.

Powder Animal rides his DYI A LOT. Doesn't seem to affect him! Maybe he can chime in here.. Or send him a PM.

I do wish I had better tools for experimentation.

Where do you find all these guys!
I feel like i have been living under a rock.
Googled them and sure enough, they are using a water jet to do splits.
Cool thing about waterjet is it takes 99% of the human error out, and you get a real clean narrow cut. All the parts my shop makes are machined, but we occasionally make parts that we waterjet the blank out first.

I realize this is a an old thread but I thought I would make a contribution nonetheless. I used to work at Boardworks Tech Shop in Bellingham, Wa. Johnny Lupo, the owner, makes killer custom splits there.

When considering splitting a board, we always told customers that a board should be in at least a 7/10 condition. So no major delams, big base gouges, etc. However, if the board's base still has a good amount of life in it and it is not "flexed out", an old board that needs some base work can be a great board to split. In terms of how the flex changes, you usually lose roughly 1 flex rating (a 7/10 becomes a 6/10).

As far as splitting a board yourself goes, you definitely want as thin a blade as possible (while still making it through the metal edge) or better yet a water jet (hard to get a hold of one though). You also want to measure, remeasure, and measure five more times when figuring out your center line.

If you end up deciding you don't want to risk ruining your snowboard, Johnny at Boardworks starts pricing at $400 for a basic splitboard build and you can mail your board in. A basic build includes a full tune, board cut & seal, & Voile hardware installation. The price also includes return shipping to you. It is a pretty good deal if you are looking to have a custom split in your quiver. More info here:

That being said, building your own split is awesome and I say go for it. But maybe practice with a couple throw away Goodwill boards first. That way if you mess up your cut it isn't a big deal.

Also, not just looking to plug my old shop! I just moved back to Spokane and am stoked to get out touring! Hope to meet up with some of you soon and get some laps in! Cheers! Hope the info helps people looking into custom splits!
