Huts in and around the panhandle?

Anyone have a list of the huts/yurts in and around Eastern WA/panhandle?

Or care to discuss some of the "good-er" ones that don't have a stupid long approach and killer skiing out the front door?

Thanks,

I'll continue to troll the TR section for ideas until then.

This is a great thread to generate a hut/cabin list. I'll scratch out a list of the some of the closer ones I'm aware of, but it'll be great to hear what others know or think to mention...

  • Snow Peak Cabin - Sherman Pass (probably the closest to Spokane)
  • West Fork Cabin - probably need a snowmobile
  • Secret Huts
  • Caribou Mountain Lodge near Sandpoint (I think there is one other I'm blanking on)
  • Just north in Canada
    • Bonnington Traverse just north of us in Canada has a multi-hut system I've been in to Grassy and Huckleberry
    • Rossland Range has huts but you are not supposed to stay the night (e.g. Igloo)
    • Kootenay Pass has two at Ripple Ridge

Saw you are new to the area. Welcome!

@lec4 has pretty much them all listed. I removed the "secret" ones since they are private property.

West Fork Cabin doesn't need a snowmobile if you can catch it when they plow access to the hydro station. I don't think that happened last year however. Snow Peak has skiing from the front door, but the Kettle Range isn't known for a deep snowpack.

You could probably add Ymir Lodge too, but then where do you stop in listing BC. ;)

If you had access to a snowmobile or a long travel day to spare you could probably use the snowmobile warming huts as well. Camels Praire has skiing out the door.

I've always thought a stay at Gold Creek Lodge would make a nice base for skiing Packsaddle. Too far to try to skin though.

The caribou mountain lodge outside of Sandpoint was recently sold and no longer rents. The small hut above caribou lake is a membership hut but hasn’t taken any new members in years.

Thanks for the heads up, that's too bad about the Caribou Lodge.

Maybe it's time to form a new membership hut?
Yea that’s an interesting question. I’m a member of the caribou hut which was started in the 70’s I think. Kinda amazes me what they were able to accomplish. Would you still be able to set something like this up today? Location is also an interesting question. Where would you do it if you had your choice?

I think it's still possible to do.. but it would have to be on state land like the Caribou Hut.
