Split How can I put Karakorums on my old Splitboard?

Hey guys,

I've bought new touring bindings this fall, and finally tried to put them on yesterday(I finally went touring today, but with old bindings unfortunately). I ran into a problem that the predrilled holes with grooves do not align with the new bindings. I've tried asking all the ski shops that mount ski bindings in Moscow, but none of them would take up the job. Does anybody have DIY experience for this kind of stuff or would like to lend me a hand or recommend a place where I could get this done?IMG_20151223_185540.jpg IMG_20151223_185556.jpg

Is this a DIY split? I've had Karakorams and I don't believe they are compatible with A DIY. I'm not positive though...

I don't quite understand what's going on with your setup. But it sounds like the inserts in the board are not in the correct location?
Moving the inserts Inserts is possible but rather involved. Slotting out the Karoloram hardware is probably the simplest.
I would be happy to help, but will not be back in town till the 2nd. And I am up in the post falls area, so that may not be very convenient.
I have a couple boards setup with the Karakoram binding and I also have a machine shop, so I always do my own ski binding mounting and any mods I want to do on my board setups.

Looking at your pics again has me wondering if you have your parts mixed up. The piece you are showing on your board looks like the heel riser piece that's supposed to have the heel riser wire in it.
But I could be wrong as the pic is not real great on my phone.
As well is this a factory split board or a do it yourself split?

Hello word bird, my name is Tonda Lark. If you are in Moscow on Saturday and can bring your board to my shop: Backcountry Lark 512 S Main St, I would be happy to take a look at your setup. I have used these bindings and maybe able to help. The shop will be open 9am to 5pm.

Kpow,
Yea and it sucks! Especially when we are getting dumped on at home! That's the worst part!
Wife picked this little island a mile long, your options for entertainment are sunburn, which I managed to do on the second day.snorkel, diving, reading and napping! Oh and I guess drinking if your into that, which I may be in another day or two!Luckily we leave for Cancun Saturday.

The main problem is for the uphill/touring mode, the downhill spacing should work even though there are only 8 holes on my split vs 12 shown there(I should measure that to double check, but I think this part is a lot more standardized for all snowboards). Karakorums require 3 screws for the uphill binding, and mine only has 2, but the biggest problem for my splitboard is the heel riser, it has female parts perpendicular to the board instead of parallel like the screw holes on the bindings do. I will definitely try to bring my split to your shop on Saturday Tonda, I was actually hoping to got there today, but I got into town @ 2 when you were closing. The shops that mount ski bindings weren't of any help.

What about using quiver killer or binding freedom inserts? You'd only need a couple it looks like.

Disclaimer: I don't know much about split boards but this works well for skis

Wordbird, did see if you answered. This must be a DIY bored right? The pic pf the piece you show above does have a third hole right there.. That would be where the tour piece should be going. If you had a DYI done with only 2 holes for the tour piece, it should have had 3. The item in the picture is neither piece for the tour mode.. Not sure what piece it is as it is not in the new Prime or Split30 setup... Did you buy it new?

Hey WordBird.. Thought I'd reach out and see how this setup worked for you last year? Was it a successful DYI? How are the bindings doing for you?

Cheers,
PP

Still Working. I wouldn't recommend Karakorums however, I don't see why they are more expensive than other bindings. There's a high chance i only will use them for 2 seasons, or even 1 season. I plan on buying my friend's skis over winter break and learn to ski when the weather gets warm enough for frequent falling. Hopefully touring will be a lot more fun, splitboarding kind of sucks honestly.

I tried what you are planning on - switching to skiing for the back country. Hate to tell you this, but unless you are a real quick learner or skied when you were a kid, plan on about 3 seasons before its actually FUN, and your confidence level will be high enough to really enjoy the back country.
I gave it 5 seasons, skiing in bounds and back country, avg 30 days a season. Then one day I got back on my board - and said - screw skis!
In my humble opinion, its never as fun in powder as a snowboard!
You are right about split boards being a pain, I used Karakorums from the start. If you do it enough it gets pretty smooth, and its not bad.
But if you want the ultimate split board setup, don't screw around, just buy the phantom setup and some dynafit TLT6 boots. You give up nothing to the skiers on the up, the change over at the top is only slightly slower than the skiers. And then you have the awesome surfing on the way back down that makes you feel like you are literally surfing on the clouds - you know what I mean!
I have great respect for all of you skiers, but it just ain't for me!
