Another tool for the bag: Backcountry SOS App

Besides a GPS app, I've often questioned the usefulness of most apps targeted to backcountry users. This one is way different:

The BackcountrySOS is a simple-to-use smartphone app that allows you to quickly get your status and location information to emergency personnel. It's low power, requires no setup and works where ever text-to-911 service is available. (I just recently saw it's available in Bonner Co, will be checking on Shoshone Co and others). And the app was made/created here in Idaho as part of the BackcountryZero project.

Looks like the text-to-911 counties are: Spokane, Kootenai, Benewah, Bonner, Mineral and Sanders. Leaving gaps in Shoshone and Boundary Co in Idaho - and Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille in Washington.

Asked the creators what happens when you try to use the app in an area not covered and will follow up.

Just downloaded it. Very quick, simple, and to the point, to where I almost accidentally sent an actual SOS.
