On Saturday there will be classes, clinics and races throughout the day, followed by the 3rd annual Wardner Peak Uphill Downhill Race on Sunday, with @Caleb defending his title? (@k.p0w in the split division)? Here's the full schedule:

Saturday:
On Snow Avalanche Class - Learn how to reduce your risk in the backcountry. Representatives from I.P.A.C. and N.S.P. will teach you how to assess risk and make decisions in the backcountry. No prior classes required; however, participants must be comfortable riding "black diamond" terrain in the trees. This class is offered free of charge. Meet a the flag poles in front of the Mountain House at 9:30 a.m.

Beacon Park Practice
- Practice your beacon skills in a controlled environment with experts on hand to answer questions and offer advice. We encourage you to bring your own beacon, but loaner beacons may be available to practice with. Single and multiple burial scenarios will be available for practice. Meet at the flag poles in front of the Mountain House at noon. Participants must be comfortable riding "blue square" terrain.

Deep Burial Race - Race head to head in teams of three to perform a deep burial beacon rescue. Beacons will be buried in five to six feet of packed snow and will require teamwork, technique, and sweat to unbury them. Singles and pairs are welcome. This event is free of charge. Meet at the flag poles in front of the Mountain House at 3 p.m.

Radio Brewing Social, Panhandle Backcountry Transition Race and Raffle Head up to Radio Brewing Company and enjoy some local craft beer, great food, good conversation, and fantastic company. Panhandle Backcountry will be hosting a transition race, so make sure you bring your boots, boards, and skins to see who can go from uphill mode to downhill the fastest. Race begins at 6 p.m.

Sunday:
Wardner Peak Uphill Downhill Race - Enjoy 675 feet of climbing and your choice of one, two, or three laps on the signature terrain of Wardner Peak. This is a short, friendly course with mellow climbs and fun descents. Whether you're a first timer, a backcountry pro, full granola, or finally getting some use out of that backcountry setup you bought with grand intentions, this is going to be fun.

---

We'll be doing the ski tour transition race on Saturday evening at Radio Brewing Company in Kellogg. So start practicing your transitions and watch those Youtube videos for tricks. Format will be along these lines:
  1. Begin with skins on, tour mode boots/bindings
  2. Transition to ski mode (rip skins, bindings and boots in ski mode)
  3. Transition back to tour mode (skins on, bindings and boots in tour mode)
  4. Drink a beer/beverage (if allowed by our hosts!)
  5. Winner!
Each event you participate in on Saturday will get you an entry in the raffle at the Radio Brewing Company social! Panda and I also are putting together some prizes for the transition race, stay tuned.

So, the UpHill/Downhill race has morphed to a Weekend backcountry event at Silver Mtn.
The first two years consisted many of our members from PanhandleBackcountry, we’d love to continue this tradition as well as have our members be the winners of the events!!!

Also.. be sure to come to the Radio Brewery for the Transition Race, as well as a great Meet & Greet for Panhandle members!!

This is an article I wrote for OutThere on the event. For those who may want to more reading, search my name on OutThereMonthly site for other articles I’ve written about Splitboarder and Panhandlebackcountry
